News Messages of 2006

December 2006
12-29-2006: Glen Helen Black Out Dates!

If you fly on our Glen Helen flying site, please check out the black out dates. We have posted the ones for 2007 today.

On black out dates nobody is allowed to fly on our Glen Helen site because there is usually a race going on at the Glen Helen race track and the area where we fly is needed as a parking lot.

12-10-2006: X-Mas Party pictures are here!

We had a great X-Mas Party this year with a big turnout of our members as well as many spouses. Special thanks go to Joe Augino who organized the event and John Richardson who set up his DJ equipment and entertained us through the evening. - Thanks a lot!

A first set of pictures is uploaded. Enjoy!

12-1-2006: The December Propeller Teller is here!

Fresch as always get it here first: - To download your copy of the newest "Propeller Teller" go to our Newsletter Section

11-30-2006: Don's Easy Glider Story

On November 12, a few of us went on a picture perfect day to our Greenspot field to fly with our motor gliders (electric and glow). Don G. took his new video glider into the air to shoot some cool air to air video. Check out the story and pictures of that adventure. To watch the video click here.

11-22-2006: Pictures from the last Pylon Race

Bob Estrella from the Gilman Springs Club prepared a great report from the last pylon race that was held at their site on November 4th. - Thanks again for your hospitality and organization!

During recent weeks a mountain lion has been spotted in the Greenspot area. Please be extra careful when flying and do never fly alone. Also check out the Safety Publication from www.mountainlion.org.

Better late than never - To download your copy of the newest "Propeller Teller" go to the newsletter section - My apologies for the late posting.

10-24-2006: Greenspot Update

In order to keep the borrow pit from being overgrown with vegetation the SBWCD has leveled all the shrubs and plants around our field. This is great, because it makes it much more forgiving if you have an outfield landing.

10-9-2006: In Retrospect ...

The fall flying season has started with two very successful and fun events: The MARKS BBQ and our Pylon Races last weekend at Greenspot. Pictures are uploaded and can be viewed from our Photo Album Thanks to the many people that took pictures and sent them in! - (Marty Nelson, Steven Lumpkin, Ed Robarge, Erik, Sven, George).

10-5-2006: Pylon Races this Saturday

We will have our monthly World Model Races this weekend on Saturday Oct. 7th at our Greenspot field. The races will start as usual at 9:00 AM and the registration begins at 8:00. After the races are over (normally around ~11:00) there is free flying at the field.

10-2-2006: Heads up for the AMA show '07 in January

It is never to early to prepare for an event, therefore, we want to start collecting ideas and material for our booth now. As many of you might already know, we will have double the usual space at our booth next year; hence, we plan to have our usual rack with our models and a video corner.

This is however just an initial idea, other ideas are welcome. We have opened a AMA '07 Forum where you can add your ideas, suggestions and so forth.

Also, please think of some neat designs for the airplane that we are going to raffle off at the AMA show (Jim Levell's Skybolt). You can download the 2D view as a PDF, add your design and bring it to the next meeting!

10-1-2006: MARKS BBQ

This year's BBQ was a great success: Many members, their families, and our friends from the Pomona Valley Flyer Club brought out their nicest models and we had tons of fun. Plus the weather was just perfect last weekend. (Read more in the upcoming newsletter!) We will soon post pictures; if you want to have your gems posted as well, please send them to webmaster@rcmarks.org

8-27-2006: Pylon Race Pre-Announcement

The next pylon race at the Gilman Springs Site will be on Saturday, September 9th not as initially indicated on Sunday. We will send out an e-mail a few days before the race as a reminder.

8-20-2006: Greenspot Update

We have added a chain to the gate at the new entrance. Please use that chain to lock the gate from now on, as this will be much easier and not involve any lifting of the gate into the locking mechanism.

On a second note: The runway is clean and weed free!. Thanks a lot to the member(s) that took out their weed whacker and cleaned out the East-side of our strip. - Great Job!

8-8-2006: Club Meeting (Thursday 8-10-06, 7:00PM)

Both the July and August newsletters are on-line now - Newsletter

8-3-2006: No August Pylon Race

It appears that many pylon racers are either on holiday this month or that their planes have melted away in the summer heat. We have, therefore, decided to reopen the pylon racing season next month (September, 10th Sun.) at the Gilman Spring flying site.
(Check out our pylon racing forum for more up to date info or if you want to leave comments).

July 2006
7-12-2006: Club Meeting (Wednesday 7-12-06, 7:00PM)

Today is meeting day! - Come and get an update on Glen Helen. Also, George will have keys to the new lock and additional information about our GH flying site. This is an excellent opportunity to get an update on those issues and ask questions.

7-7-2006: Glen Helen Update

The lock is on and we have our field back!
As indicated before this is a new lock and you need to sign a form to get a key for it. George will be at the field this Saturday (7/8) from 6:00AM to 10:00AM. The next opportunity to get a key is at the meeting next week on Wednesday (7/12).

7-1-2006:
(12:32)
Glen Helen Update

Hello MARKS members,
Unfortunately we will have to postpone our reentry to our site. I was really looking forward to it but considering how busy the people are a the track today with a 12 hour endurance race it's understandable that they haven't been able to worry about us just yet. I wouldn't have got everyone worked up and anticipating flying on Sunday if I wasn't given the impression we were going to be able to so just hang in there just a little bit longer and I will keep everyone posted.

George

6-30-2006: Glen Helen Update

Hello MARKS members,
I'm very sorry since I had anticipated letting everyone know the status of our Glen Helen site tonight. Unfortunately one of the conditions of our return has become a stumbling block and hopefully we can have it resolved very soon. I still have hope that we can meet on Sunday and will keep you posted daily. If for some reason things are not ready then we will most likely have to wait until the week starting on the 12th. Keep in mind we have a meeting Wednesday the 14th.

George Manning

6-29-2006: Glen Helen Amendment: Yes, we will be able to fly this Sunday at Glen Helen :-).
6-27-2006: Glen Helen Update

More Good News! We will be able to fly again on our Glen Helen site starting this Sunday July 2nd. However, under the new deal with the Race Track Management everybody that flies there has to sign a set of rules before he/she is given a key to the new lock. You can read the rules, sign the form, and get a new key from George this Sunday, at the Glen Helen field.

It is imperative that no one approaches anybody form the Race Track Staff or Management from now one. This is the job of the club officers. We cannot emphasize this enough. - Thanks a lot for your understanding and we hope to see you all on Sunday! - Happy Flying!

George and Andreas

6-22-2006: Glen Helen Update

Good News! - We are in active negotiations with the Glen Helen Race Track to reopen our field. However, before everything is settled and correctly dealt with it is absolutely imperative for everybody to stay away from the GH flying site.

If nothing unforeseen happens we should be flying again within two to three weeks. - New guidelines and rules will be communicated when available. - Thanks for your patience.

6-21-2006: Greenspot: The lock has been changed!

Our lock has been moved from the old red gate to the new gate that we can use now. This new gate is somewhat smaller than the previous one but the principle is the same: it is a steel swing gate. Remember to exit always to the right if you drive out of the new gate. Going left is suicidal because you cannot see around to corner.

I was today at the Greenspot field and the conditions of the runway are as they were two weeks ago. The water receded but there is still enough water to fly float planes. If somebody has a weed wacker and a bit spare time to cut the weeds on the East end then the field would again be in pretty good shape.

No news on Glen Helen yet - we are expecting to hear something back daily. Please be patient. - Thanks.

6-15-2006: Important Greenspot Update

Starting next week, on Wednesday June 21st, we will be able to use another gate to access our Greenspot field. This gate is approximately 180 yards to the North of the current gate. The lock will be moved that Wednesday and a sign will be posted temporarily. Please let everybody know about the change.

Using this gate will save the club a substantial amount of fees every year. Thanks to George Koch who has arranged for this deal!

Be careful when entering the gate and even more prudent when exiting on Greenspot road. - The gate is in the curve and therefore YOU MUST MAKE A RIGHT TURN ON GREENSPOT ROAD WHEN EXITING THE GATED AREA. Here is a map - Thanks.

6-8-2006: Photo of the Month Contest top three:

1: Here goes the prop of a trainer (Erik Blaser)
2: On Patrol at GreenSpot (Vic Bradley)
3: Henry's reflection in the Staggerwing's spinner (Enrique Arance)

Congratulations!

6-6-2006: Our Newsletter is out - Vote for the Photo of the Month

6-5-2006: Club Meeting this Wednesday at 7:00 PM

May 2006
5-29-2006: Greenspot Memorial Day Weekend

We had a nice flying day today (Memorial Day) at our Greenspot location (Check out the pictures!). There was quite a crowd flying anything from trainers over foamies to warbirds. For other updates check our Greenspot Forum

5-27-2006: Warbird Rally 2006 - In Retrospect

Prices, Awardes, and the winnners ...

5-23-2006: The Warbird Rally 2006 pictures are here!

Everybody had a great time last Saturday at the Norton Field of the PVMAC during our Warbird Rally 2006 and the participation was great, considering the fact that there was some heavy competition from other big local events that weekend. Thanks everybody for participating and creating such a nice, amicable atmosphere; and of course special thanks to the PVMAC Club for sharing their field with us!

We will have a special section in our upcoming newsletter covering our two May events so I will keep it short. I pooled our pictures with those that Marty Nelson of the PVMAC (Thanks!) took and put them into our Photo Gallery. - Enjoy!

5-16-2006: Warbird Rally

The Warbird Rally will take place at the Norton Field of the Pomona Valley Club, who generously offered us to use their field for this event. Please let everybody know that the event will be held at Norton and not at Glen Helen this year.

For an updated status of our preparations visit our internal Warbird Rally forum; if you have general questions please contact George directly.

- Thanks and hope to see you there!

5-10-2006: The Redlands Fly-In pictures are finally uploaded!

There were so many good pictures that I had a hard time choosing. Thanks a lot to all the photographers: Nadia, Vic, Henry, Gerardo, and of course Walt with his airborne helicopter.

The pictures are accessible on from our Photo Gallery. - Enjoy!
5-9-2006: Glen Helen!

Reminder: Please do not fly at our Glen Helen Site until further notice The lock has been changed and nobody is currently to access our Glen Helen field or to contact the the race track management.

We will post an update and send out an e-mail once this is sorted out. - Thanks!
5-6-2006: Redlands Fly-In

Thanks to everyone who helped making this event a really enjoyable experience for all that participated and an exciting show for the spectators. Our two clubs worked great together and our show was widely regarded as excellent. The Airboss and the Airport Manager were really happy with us too and in this context a special thanks goes to the pilots and spotters who not only did a great job performing but did so also within the limits that we established. - Great job, thanks a lot!

5-5-2006: Redlands Fly-In this Saturday May 6th

Please try to attend this once a year event - We want to show the public what a cool Hobby RC flying. We should have a nice show prepared and the weather seems to play along as well. Don't forget to bring your models for static display (Before 8:00AM). For further details go to our Internal Forum and select the Redlands Fly-In link. Maps how to get there are here: Overall Map, Detail Map.

Greenspot is closed this Saturday May 6th!

There is absolutely no flying this Saturday at Greenspot while the Redlands Fly-In is going on. I will change the lock and post signs. - Thanks for your consideration.

5-4-2006: Important Glen Helen Update!

Please do not fly at our Glen Helen Site until further notice; there have been some delays processing our insurance policy and with the renewal of our lease with the Glen Helen Raceway. - This is very important.

I will post an update and send out an e-mail once those issues are resolved. - Thanks!
April 2006
4-28-2006: Greenspot Update

I went out to Greenspot today and the water was around 5 ft. away from the runway, so the whole runway is open with plenty of water still left for float flying. The weeds are still just taking over the east end of the runway the rest looks pretty clear. [Josh Wahrer]

4-28-2006: Two Important Notes

Glen Helen will be closed this Sunday (4-30)!
Please keep this in mind when making plans for the weekend.

Redlands Fly-In Dry Run is this Sunday (4-30) at the AMAA field
If you are going to take part at the flying demos please try to attend, because this is the only time we will have for flying together before the event.

Glen Helen is closed on Sunday and Greenspot is still partially submerged, therefore, the AMAA club offered that we can have our dry run at their Field (Thanks a lot guys!) This field is in the the San Timoteo Canyon, check out their web-site for details (AMAA Map & Directions). We'll meet there at 9:00, have a short orientation, followed by flying each show block once so people get familiar with what airplanes will be aloft at one time.

4-26-2006: Our new MARKS hats have arrived!

Our new hats look really great - In fact I am wearing one right now :-).
I'll bring the box with the hats to the Dry-Run on Sunday and will have them for sale in the white bus. Each hat is $10 and after May $12. If you want to be sure to get one you can send me an e-mail and I'll reserve one for you.

4-24-2006: Redlands Fly-In

The Redlands Fly-In is only two weeks away - Next weekend (Sunday April 30.) we will have our dry-run and all pilots participating at the show should plan to come and run the their show through once. This is important especially for all the blocks with more than one plane in the air simultaneously. The Dry Run will be at the AMAA site at Fisherman's Retreat. If you have any questions please let me know.

Here is a picture of the banner dry run this last weekend.

4-22-2006: Greenspot Update

The water is going down.
I was out at Greenspot today about 1:00 this afternoon and the water had gone down quite a bit, there is now about 552 ft. of usable runway including the part that is covered by weeds. [Josh Wahrer]

4-21-2006: The new Race Planes have arrived!

John Richardson has ordered seven more pylon racing ARFs (no Japanese Zero's).  He was able to get the same price break on seven as on ten planes ordered previously. So if you want to reserve your favorite racer give him or Joe a call or sent them an e-mail (Check out the roster for that). [Chuck]

4-21-2006: Message from Joyce Hager, Acting Executive Director AMA

Survey of Modelers on New Proposed Program

4-15-2006: MARKS "Stuff"

We have a new web-page where you can view and reserve hats and shirts with the MARKS logo. The new hats are ordered and they will arrive just in time for our Redlands Fly-In and the Warbird rally. - Reserve one while they last!

4-6-2006: Message from Joyce Hager, Acting Executive Director AMA

Several full-scale aircraft companies are demanding royalties from modeling manufacturers, therefore some of the modeling manufacturers are discontinuing to produce these products.

AMA needs your help. We need you to call members of the Congressboth House and Senateto voice your opinion. Go to our Web site at http://www.modelaircraft.org/supportletter.asp for full details about how you can help.

Don't wait, do it today!

Joyce Hager

4-5-2006: MARKS Meeting

It seems that I messed up the meeting dates, that is, we had originally planned on having a meeting today (April 5.), but I had told everybody (including Robert) that the meeting was next week. - My apologies - I hope nobody went to the SBDO airport today.

The April Newsletter will arrive early next week for those of you who get it by mail; on-line it is already available. The next meeting will be on Wednesday April 12th. - Thanks, Andreas.

4-2-2006: Greenspot Update

Flying today at Greenspot was pure fun. The water conditions are simply great. The water is still about half way up the runway but you can fly small planes or float planes from the GS field. Image 1 Image 2

Check out the pictures for more details and don't forget to use the alternate route to get to the field, they are still working on the main access road. [Andreas]

March 2006
3-30-2006:

Pylon Race Cancelled!

Due to the great amount of rain we had in the recent days "Lake Greenspot" is now covering again about 50% of the runway and our West Pylon is under water. Therefore, the pylon race of this coming Saturday is cancelled. [Joe]

3-25-2006:

Field Updates: Now all members can provide input on the condition and situation of fields; check out the links below about the field updates. Pat added an entry under the Greenspot Field today.

The Field threads are also accessible from our General Forum page.

3-24-2006: Important Greenspot Update

Glen Helen is closed because of an Event at the race track and Greenspot has a reduced usable runway (~486ft).

The road going down to the Greenspot field is still under construction. However, if you turn right at the top of the hill, follow the road to their pipes and you can make it to our field in a round about way. All three lakes are full of water and it looks as if our runway is under water too. [Pat, Josh 4:30 PM, on Friday March 24]

3-18-2006: Greenspot Update

Erik and I were going to break in an engine and fly some electrics at Greenspot this morning (Sat 3/18). However the road to our field is closed about half ways down (where the third small basin is located). This was fine for us, because there is enough space for electrics there, however if you need more space you will have to wait until they finish that mini project. They are putting in a drainage pipe across the road. - If somebody has an update please let me know and I'll put it here. - Thanks!

3-11-2006: Annual MARKS Warbird Rally:

Also we have 5 additional hay bales that are destined for Greenspot if there are any volunteers, please check with Woody or me to get them there.
2-13-2006: Greenspot Update:
There is still water in our Lake Greenspot, however it seems because of the low amount of precipitation that we got this year there is not too much water left. If you want to fly float planes you better do it now.
2-9-2006: We have a new Club Secretary! - Erik Blaser volunteered to take on this job for the next year. - Thanks a lot Erik!

Please come to this meeting, especially if you intend to help at our show booth so we can do some planning. Also, Chuck will have the AMA batches ready at the meeting. December 2005
12-27-2005: Update on conditions at Greenspot
The people at the dam have begun to dump water into our area. As of Monday morning, the water level was approximately 255 feet from the west end of the runway. The water goes the entire length of the pit from north to south. The measuring pole on the west end of the pit has only one foot showing, so the water is fairly deep. In other words, those who have floats can float fly again. Also, thanks to all those people who have been sweeping the runway! [Pat]

The image was taken this Monday (12/26) it shows lake Greenspot in the background and George with Mario's heli up front.

12-18-2005: We have a new entry in our Member Pages Section: Check out the photo and video work of Josh Wahrer featuring in-flight videos from his amphibian plane at our Greenspot flying site. Member Pages
12-17-2005: John has completed his new P-38. He says that the only things left to do are to adjust all of the control surfaces and tune the engines. - Watch out for some action soon in Glen Helen or in the Desert!
12-14-2005: For all the RC jet interested, Robert sent a link to a promising magazine focusing on RC Jets. Here is the link: JET Power
12-10-2005: The pictures of this year's Christmas Party are posted! - Pictures courtesy of George.
12-7-2005: We have some new movie clips in our collection - If you have time and are looking for some entertainment, go check them out! (Movie Page).
November 2005
11-29-2005: There are a lot of links to funny, interesting, or otherwise flight related web-sites makeing their round. We now have a page that collects these "master pieces". Check it out under our new Movie Link Page. If you find a cool clip please send me that link so we can post it as well. Cheers and enjoy watching!

10-16-2005: Glen Helen Update:

The normal Gate that we have been using as the entrance to our field has been replaced.

The new gate is part of the new fencing that has been erected by the Motorcycle Raceway along the side of Verdemont Road. The locking procedure is the same: The shackle on our lock is passed through the shackle of the raceway lock, then through a link of the chain that has been looped around the vertical posts of the fence and then our lock is closed. (Chuck)

8-23-2005: Glen Helen Reminder:
This weekend on Sunday Aug. 28. there will be a gcrallX car race on the wash that we normally traverse to get to our flying site at Glen Helen.

Do not drive under any circumstance through the wash
and across their tracks that day!

We have had them there twice already and they are just great people. It does not interrupt our flying. The only thing we have to do is follow the path that they lay out for us to get to our field. You are also welcome to watch and give them a wave!
8-22/3-2005: The President's Letter has been posted tonight. This letter is only accessible to Club Members. If you need to get access information please send an e-mail to your webmaster
8-22/3-2005: Greenspot Update!
Pat has made quite a bit of headway with the help of Josh (his son) and Vic B (Thanks!). He is now in need of hay bails and is looking into getting a parking lot sweeper out there to clean up the runway. If anybody can help with this please contact Pat.
Also: "Lake Greenspot" is still usable for float planes
Pictures of the runway: 1, 2, 3, and 4
8-19-2005: Our web-site is now already up for a couple of weeks and it was time for a reassessment. In this context I have analyzed the usage and found that some of the pages were nested too deep down in the site hierarchy, that is they were pretty hard to find. To improve on this I have added links to the Weather, Calender, and Photo Gallery pages to the Member Section on the left (Navigation Bar). This was a pretty big change, because all pages had to be modified. - So if you see something that doesn't work please send me a note and I am going to fix it. - Thanks!
8-15-2005: We have a new Model- and Picture of the Month.
8-10-2005: The August Newsletter is available for download.
8-10-2005: Greenspot Update!
The water level has gone down dramatically and there are now about 360 feet of runway. That is, the Greenspot field is back in business for float and non-float planes. However, there are some rocks and weed on the runway that need to be removed.

Please check with Pat if you are able to give him a hand. - Thanks!

Note for Float Fliers: The water level of "Lake Greenspot" has gone down approximately 60 feet since Sunday so if you are interested in float flying you should go there soon (Pat).
8-7-2005: Don't miss the next meeting (Thursday 8-11-05)

July 2005
7-30-2005:

Another step: Our site is officially complete!

We have added the Flight School section, started the MARKS Member Section, plus we have an online Roster and the design for the Frequency Distribution page. Some of these pages are for members only (Sorry!); we'll communicate how to access these pages at the next best occasion. - Hey, now that the new web-page is done, I might get back to flying RC planes soon :-).
7-27-2005: The Club's Bylaws are now posted.
7-26-2005: Back from my vacation: All models that have been submitted so far are posted. In this context: Members, please submit your own models, so we can post them as well. - Thanks.
7-12-2005: The July Newsletter is available for download.
7-11-2005: The former web address points now to the new address (www.rcmarks.org): We are all set and our new site is officially on-line!
7-10-2005: The first part of the new MARKS web-site is now 90% complete. Today the Useful Links page was added. Pages that are still in the works are the: "RC Flight Training", "Member", "Frequency Distribution", and "Roster" pages. Also members can send in their entries for the Model info for the Model Gallery.
7-7-2005: After a break caused by a "dead" router, I am back in business. Our site features now detailed weather data per flying site. Checkout our Weather Page. You get to the Weather via the Club Info and the Flying Sites. I will, however, make this page more accessible.

Further, check out the club's Photo Gallery. Members can send in their pictures to be posted on the web for everybody's enjoyment. Photos are grouped by month and by event.
7-3-2005: Added Authentication for adding and modifying MARKS calendar events. Once everybody is setup with the new MARKS e-mails, I am going to send out an e-mail with user name/password necessary to update our Calendar.
7-2-2005: Added the calendar capability. - This is really cool because everybody with a password can add/edit/delete entries in the calendar that everybody can browse. Currently there is no password necessary so go try it out (MARKS Calendar). I will however add that feature as well ... we don't want people messing around with our calendar.
June 2005
6-30-2005: Started Model Gallery and created Model Gallery Form so that members can submit their models to be listed as well. Please start adding your models so we have a nice collection. I'll see that I can add submissions as they come in. - Instructions of how to add models are found on any of the Model Category pages under the Model Gallery page.
6-29-2005: Started Club Activities page, setup Picture of the Month and Model of the Month pages. Updated History Page and prepard for content. Added scripting support, that is, the submit button on the member applicaiton form sends the form to Chuck (treasurer@rcmarks.org).
